Solar hot water

Solar hot waterSolar hot water reduces your carbon emissions and can also reduce your energy bills.

Hot water production in the UK accounts for some 8% of our total energy use. In houses, water is typically heated by heat from gas or oil fired central heating boilers or from electric immersion heaters (or a combination of the two). This results in millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere each year. The use of solar energy reduces these emissions, helping to combat climate change.

A domestic solar hot water system can generate 50-70% of your hot water using radiation from the sun. Aturi offers both domestic and commercial systems, using only highly efficient and quality components for a reliable solar installation. Aturi is a Vaillant accredited solar hot water installer.

The benefits of solar hot water

  • Hot water throughout the year – A solar hot water system works all year round, though you’ll need to heat the water further with a boiler or immersion heater during the winter months.
  • Cut your bills – Sunlight is free, so once you’ve paid for the solar hot water initial installation your hot water costs will be reduced.
  • Cut your carbon footprint – Solar hot water is a green, renewable heating system and doesn’t release any harmful carbon dioxide or other pollutants.

Solar hot water technology is considered one of the best renewable technologies (Energy Saving Trust) and you can genuinely turn off your boiler between May and September. The system lasts 25 years or more, so over time the savings will only get better.

How does solar hot water work?

Solar hot water systems use solar panels, called collectors, fitted to your roof. These collect heat from the sun and use it to warm water which is stored in a hot water cylinder.

There are two types of solar water heating panels: evacuated tubes and flat plate collectors. Flat plate collectors can be fixed on the roof tiles or integrated into the roof. Aturi install both flat plate and evacuated tube solar heating panels.

A boiler or immersion heater can be used as a backup to heat the water further. This ensures it can reach the temperature set by the cylinder’s thermostat or when the solar water heating system does not reach the desired temperature.

How much does a solar hot water system cost?

The cost of a solar hot water system depends on the size and type of system. An average domestic solar hot water system from Aturi costs between £3,500 and £5,000. Contact us to discuss your requirements and get a quote.
